Latin Roots & Affixes, Lesson 17

Today's lesson will focus on the prefixes ideo, infra, and juxta as well as the roots manu, fer, gen, log, and luc.

PREFIXES

The prefix ideo means “idea”. Besides the word idea, you may recognize the word ideal.

The prefix infra means “below, beneath” or “inferior”. Have you seen the word infrared?

The prefix juxta means “near” or “beside”. Juxtapose means to put beside.

ROOTS

The root manu means “hand”. Does your car have a manual transmission?

The root fer means “carry”. No doubt you have come across the word transfer.

The root gen means "birth". The first book of the Bible, the so called story of creation, is Genesis.

The root log or logue means “word” or “thought”. Of course, you understand what a dialog is, right?

The root luc means “light”. So, when something is quite clear, or easy to understand, it is lucid. Is this lucid to you?

Instructions: Using what you know about these roots and affixes and the context, determine the meaning of the following bold-faced words.

  1. During the presidential campaign, there was great concern with the state of America’s infrastructure😄 The root -struct- means "build".. It was noted, for example, that many of America’s bridges were aging badly.
